The First Session Educational Symposium for Teacher’s Professional Development of BCCSC
The First Session Educational Symposium for Teacher’s Professional Development of BCCSC was held on Jan.25th, 2010 at the meeting room that located on the third floor of Wen Du Leisure City International Hotel. The main leaders who attended the seminar are Dr. Peng Jianhua, the chairman of CCSC; Mr. Wang Benzhong, the Legal Principal; Miss. Xue Mei, the executive Principal; Mr. Tian Zhenzhou, Mr. Jiang Tao, The Vice-Principal; Miss Bonita Carson, the Canadian Vice-Principal; Miss Jin Zhi, the secretary of The Communist Party Branch; Miss Li Daqi, the leader of English Department; Mr. Wan Bingsheng, the Principal of An Hui CCSC and Mr. Chen Feng, the Vice-Principal of Shen Zhen CCSC and so on. All of the teachers, part of the staff and two student representatives attended the meeting on time.
Mr. Tian Zhenzhou presides over this meeting and Dr. Peng Jianhua gave us a very warm welcome speech. He put emphasis on the significance of education and teaching and also mentioned that these two points played a very important role in the development of students. Dr. Peng stated “We should research the development of moral education according to educational globalization.” Dr. Peng also brought forward several important points, such as, the reform of courses and teaching, double-language courses and AP courses. All his talk about innovation means that teachers need more professional development for teachers: a new challenge for teachers.
Miss Xue gave us a speech named “Creating high quality environment, improving Teacher’s Professional Development”. Miss Xue reviewed ups and downs of BCCSC in the past 13 years, introduced students’ matriculating and scholarship among the past 10 years. Miss Xue concluded that there are 4 aspects in showing teachers how to create a high quality environment and improving teacher’s professional development. Firstly, the basic condition for teachers to perform their professional development is to set up a perfect teaching research system; secondly, the development of CCSC’s courses provided teachers a stage; to help teachers develop their professional skill and thinking. Thirdly, CCSC introduced several new skills and media which provided teachers good opportunity to improve their professional skill. Fourthly, the key point of creating good teaching and learning environment is the moral development of teachers.
The third content of the meeting was the Teachers Topic Speech. More than 10 teachers gave speeches in the meeting such as Yang Zhen, Zhang Gang, Wang Lingling, Niu Yadong, Cao Xiaopeng, Tian Yumin, Jia Rongzhi, Diao Jie, Yi Xiazai and so on. Miss Jiang Tian, the geography teacher, chose the topic “Smart Board and Teacher’s Professional Development”. It had 4 conclusions; Firstly, Smart Board changed the traditional education style; Secondly, Smart Board improved teacher’s professional development; Thirdly, Smart Board improved teaching quality; Fourthly, the profound thinking brought about by using Smart Board. Miss Jiang Tian illustrated how Smart Board helps teachers. Li Fangyi and Liu Yang Tian Jiao, the student representatives spoke from their experience in order to prove the obvious effect and good function of Smart Board. Yang Zhen, Zhang Gang, and Wang Lingling, the Chinese Language teachers, topic was “Improving teacher’s Professional Skill, improving the new development of New Courses Chinese Language.” They introduced their theory according to 3 specific examples, “Hu Tong Civilizaton”, “Drama” and “Researching of Dream of Red Mansions”. Mr Niu Yadong, the psychology teacher, topic was “how to introduce MMPI to BCCSC”. Mr Niu uses a large number of statistics to show how MMPI System analyses students’ psychology. There are 3 aspects. Firstly, analyze students’ psychology in a broad sense; secondly, selecting out students who have psychology problem and behavior problem in order to develop work purposively; thirdly, promoting humanized management.
Mr. Cao Xiaopeng, the secretary of Committee, his topic was “How to cultivate students’ Leadership and how to bring that to practice.” This is composed of an in school item and out school item. The latter one concludes s 4 parts.1, simulating UN; 2, teenagers’ seminar about world heritage; 3, summer camp; 4, America Carnegie Training. The former one concludes 3 parts. 1, Dormitory Plan; 2, Gr11 Training; 3, Social Practice. Mr. Tian Yumin’s topic was “improving the morality of teachers, creating CCSC style school”. It concludes two points, they are; firstly, strengthen the professional skill training; Secondly, improving management of teachers’ self-cultivation and teaching skill. Miss Jia Rongzhi and Diao Jie on behalf of English Department gave teachers a speech about how to respect the difference between students and the reason why we introduce leveled-teaching to English study. They analyze this feature of our school and bring forward the advantage and disadvantage of performing leveled-teaching in BCCSC. The last teacher who gave a speech is Mr. Yi Xiazai from the math department. His topic was “introducing international courses, creating an international college”. He put emphasis on three points; the first one is the significance of introducing international courses. The second one is the strategy of AP courses. The third one is the current situation of the double-language course and the AP course.
The passionate atmosphere brought the meeting to a close at 5 o’clock of that day.
We continued the seminar at 8:00am on Jan. 26th. Teachers were divided into 6 groups such as, Chinese Language, Math, English, Physics, Chemistry, Bio, History, Geography, Politics, PE, Music and Art, then teachers started to discuss something related to their researching topic with their partners. Teachers expressed their own opinion among Group Discussion and the group leaders were in charge of collecting teachers’ suggestion in order to convey those to the leaders and teachers. Liu Yinmeng, Han Zesheng, Zhang Jinhai, Ma Xiaokui, Ma Ge and Ni Shaobo reported in the meeting. The topic of Chinese Department is innovational courses; teaching and making presentation; teaching style. The Math Department discussed 3 points; they are, the AP course; teaching and education; Math teaching material concluding. The English Department put emphasis on Leveled-Teaching, they concluded some methods to carry out Level-Teaching, some problems of management in Level C and how to evaluate the marks of Level A, B and C.
Physics, Chemistry, and Bio Department’s topic mentioned many prospects. They reported that Smart Board can not replaced of students’ grouping activities, the relationship between Smart Board and these activities should be close, we can not cancel any of them, and we can not just depend on only one of them. We should consider these two tools as a whole in order to get a perfect teaching effect. Every teacher thought Leveled-Teaching is a very good way to improve students’ studying, but it is very hard to bring it into effect, because we can not find an effective way to evaluate students’ level. Teachers of double-language and AP have some problem that they do not know the how many courses are suitable for students from different grades and different levels. They also brought forward that a projector can help students’ study. Their report concluded 3 aspects, innovational thinking, effective teaching and how to promote an interest in study for the students. The History, Geography, and Politics Department developed 3 methods for class teaching; Speech Style; Cliffhang Style and Contest Style. They pay more attention to avoiding making teaching becomes a format. PE, Music and Art Department’s report includes 4 topics and 2 hopes. They expressed that they will improve themselves on two sides, professional skill and morality. They reported that teachers should learn new skills, and extend professional knowledge. They hope the school can change the grade in which students learn psychology from Gr.12 to Gr.10. They also hope for the school to provide and arrange teachers to attend training.
The next item of this seminar is “question and answer time.” Dr. Pang Jianhua, Mr. Wang Benzhong and Miss Xue mei went onto the stage and had a face-to-face talk to every teacher. Teachers can ask any questions that related to the development of BCCSC. Miss Li Daqi affirmed the achievement of our work and put emphasis on how to solve the problem of bad studying behavior and bad morality of our students, she also expressed that these problems just like a barrier which can make our development become slow. Miss Wang Yali asked “how do the leaders consider the problem of teachers’ ability of teaching and how to encourage teachers to improve their professional development.” Mr. Wang Benzhong said that we can collect all the problems about teachers’ work together and organized a seminar to solve them. Miss Li Mingchun’s question was about how to make ensure the recruitment of students. Under the situation of enlargement of CCSC, we were facing a very serious problem that more and more students choose the CCSC which near to their hometown as new schools are opening in different cities in China. So, the recruitment of students will become hard for BCCSC. Dr. Peng Jianhua used a large number of statistics to analyze the prospect and recruitment of BCCSC and the fact prove that everything is in control now. The new innovation such as, AP course and double-language course will attract more students the only thing we should do is to improve our professional skill and make efforts to help our students study well.
We invited Miss Zhang Minxia, T he Secretary-General, who is the expert in the area of ‘COP’ to give a lecture. Her topic is “the professional development that is based on network COP (Communities Of Practice).” Her topic concludes the introduction of item COP, the reason why we set up COP. Miss Zhang also gave us a vivid example to explain COP, and she helped us to understand the working process of COP and the significance of this item.
The next section of this seminar is awards. There were 3 teachers awarded the First Prize (good class presentation), they are, Miss Liu yinfen, Miss Guo Xiaodan and Miss Jiang Tian. There were 5 teachers awarded the Second Prize (good class presentation), they are, Miss Xia Meilin, Miss Sun Hongyi, Miss Liying, Miss Wang Zhanying and Miss Xiong Yan. There were 7 teachers awarded the Third Prize (good class presentation), they are, Miss Liu Di, Miss Ai Lina, Miss Liu Yan , Miss Zhang Jiaoli, Miss Liu Yan, Miss Zhang Jihui, Miss Yong Ronghua and Miss Tang Naigeng. There are 3 teachers awarded the First Prize (good paper) , they are, Mr, Yi Xiazai, Mr. Niu Yadong and Miss Xiong Yan. There are 7 teachers awarded the Second Prize, they are, Mr. Cao Xiaopeng, Miss Wang Lingling, Miss Xia Meilin, Mr. Ni Shaobo, Miss Jiang Tian Miss Cheng Yi, Miss Diao Jie, Miss Jia Rongzhi and Miss Diao Jie. There are 17 teachers awarded the Third Prize, they are, Mr. Tian Yumin, Mr, Wang Pengchao, Miss Ma Ziyin, Miss Song Yan, Mr. Luo Yulong, Mr. Yang Zhen, Miss Yang Zhen, Miss Wang Xueling, Miss Chen Yingjie, Miss Jia Chunyan, Miss Ren Lirong, Miss Zhong Zhaofang, Miss Zhao Jiaoli, Miss Ma Xiaokui, Mr. Peng Xu, Miss Li Ying and Miss Hu Yunchi.
Miss Xue Mei, the Executive Principal explained the rules about how to choose the NO.1 Teacher of BCCSC.
At last, Mr. Wang Benzhong gave a conclusion speech. Mr. Wang introduced the difficulties of normal high school in China, it concludes with 3 aspects. The first one is teachers and leaders of school pay more attention to the recruitment of students. The second one is the college entrance examination has lost its significance. The last one is that there are a lot of rules in the aspect of traditional education; they stopped the various development of high school. Mr. Wang analyzed the opportunities and disadvantages factor of BCCSC, brought forward the new development strategy of BCCSC, expressed that the open mind and creative concept are the most important thing and stressed on the differences of students’ family background, character and habits. At last, Mr. Wang announced 3 programs that will carry into execution; they are, cultivating students’ ability of to become a leader (moral education and life planning), “3+3 college plan” and setting a new stage for teachers’ professional development.
Mr Tian Zhenzhou’s speech brought this seminar to a close.
